How Much Life Insurance Do You Actually Need?
If you ask five different people how much life insurance you need, you’ll probably get five different answers. Some will say “10 times your income.” Others will say “enough to cover the mortgage.” The truth is that a generic multiple rarely matches your actual financial picture, and either overinsuring or underinsuring costs you real money.
A more reliable starting point is the DIME method, which adds up four categories: Debt (everything you owe, from credit cards to your mortgage balance), Income replacement (the years your family would need your income replaced, multiplied by your annual salary), Mortgage (if not already counted in debt), and Education (future tuition costs for your children). Add those together and subtract any existing savings or life insurance you already have, and you land on a coverage number that reflects your actual obligations rather than a rule of thumb.
For most families in their peak earning years, that number lands somewhere between 10 and 12 times annual income, but the details matter. A 35-year-old with a 25-year mortgage and two young children needs a very different policy than a 55-year-old whose kids are through college and whose mortgage is nearly paid off.
Term length matters as much as the coverage amount. A 20-year policy that runs out before your mortgage is paid off or your kids are through school leaves a gap right when you’re most exposed. Matching your term length to your actual timeline, sometimes by layering two or three policies of different lengths (a strategy called laddering), often costs less than one large policy and covers you more precisely.

I walk every client through a full needs analysis, covering debt, income replacement, education costs, and existing coverage, before recommending a policy or a carrier, and I compare options across dozens of national carriers to find the best combination of coverage and price for your situation.
